Lab Overview

Learn how to handle dirty data in Tableau Public using Data Interpreter, split messy columns, configure dynamic dimension filters, and craft interactive view controls.

Step-by-Step Instructions

  1. Download and connect to MV_Sales_Clean.xlsx.
  2. On the Data Source page, review data hygiene. If column headers contain irregular leading titles, activate the Data Interpreter checkbox.
  3. Perform a custom split on combined location or code fields to isolate individual dimension keys.
  4. Switch to Sheet 1 and build a regional sales performance cross-tab.
  5. Apply a dimension filter on the Group field. Show the interactive filter card on the right margin.
  6. Configure the filter card as a Single Value (List) or Multiple Values (Dropdown) selector.
  7. Create a calculated field Profit Ratio defined as SUM([Profit]) / SUM([Sales]) and format as a percentage.
  8. Add Profit Ratio to Color with a diverging color palette (Red-Blue or Orange-Blue diverging) centered at 0.
  9. Take verification screenshots capturing the filter controls, Data Source schema, and customized color legend. Submit to Canvas.
