This lab teaches you how to add data source filters, view filters, wildcard filtering, and highlighters to create interactive dashboards in Tableau Public. You will work with MV_Sales.xls (re-used from Lab 1).

Deliverables (14 points)

  1. Group Filter Screenshot — Applied filter keeping Furniture, Office Supplies, and Technology only. Include your name. (3 pts)
  2. Wildcard State Filter Screenshots (Steps 14 & 15) — Show wildcard section excluding "New". (3 pts)
  3. Sum(Revenue) on X-axis with Furniture Excluded Screenshot — Include your name. (3 pts)
  4. Exercise 1 Completed Result Screenshot — Must show Filters, Rows and Columns shelves, sorted visualization, and your name. (5 pts)

Part 1: Add Filters to a Visualization

  1. Navigate to public.tableau.com. Sign in with Tableau Public credentials.
  2. Click Create → Web Authoring.
  3. In the Files tab, click Upload from computer. Locate and open MV_Sales.xls.
  4. Drag the Instructions table to the main canvas area. Click Update Now.
  5. At the bottom, click the Sheet 1 worksheet tab.
  6. A. Data Source Filter: Group Dimension

    1. In the main menu, click Data → Instructions (MV_Sales) → Edit Data Source Filters.
    2. Apply a filter to the Group dimension. Keep only: Furniture, Office Supplies, and Technology. Click OK twice.
    3. Drag the Group dimension from the Data pane to the Columns shelf.
    4. In the Data pane, hover over the Instructions (MV_Sales) dataset name → click the black arrow → Edit Data Source Filters.
    5. B. State or Province Wildcard Filter

      1. Add a filter to State or Province using a Wildcard to exclude values starting with New (i.e., New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, New Mexico).
      2. Drag State or Province from the Data pane to the Rows shelf.
      3. Note: no data records appear for states starting with "New" — this confirms the wildcard filter worked.
      4. C. Revenue Column Filter

        1. Drag the Revenue measure to Columns.
        2. Right-click the Furniture column in the visualization → Exclude.
        3. In the Filters shelf, hover over Group, click the white arrow → Show Filter.
        4. Note the Group filter appears on the right-hand pane. Scroll to the top of the list.
        5. Hover over the title of the Office Supplies column → click the sort icon (descending).
        6. Hover over the title of the Technology column → click the sort icon. The list now shows descending revenue by state, broken down by Technology.
        7. Scroll to see that some states have negligible technology revenue: Maine, Vermont, Idaho, Iowa.
        8. In the Columns shelf, hover over SUM(Revenue), click the white arrow → Show Filter.
        9. In the Revenue filter card on the right, drag the range slider from the left to approximately 30,000. Only revenue values above ~29,056 remain visible.
        10. D. Publish Exercise 1

          1. Click Publish As, enter the name "Filters & Highlighting", and click Publish.
          2. Capture the final screenshot showing Filters, Rows and Columns shelves, sorted visualization, and your name.

Part 2: View and Add Highlighters

          1. In the published "Filters & Highlighting" workbook, click on the blue Illinois bar under Office Supplies. This highlights that specific bar and dims all others.
          2. Click the state name Illinois in the left-side legend. Both bars (Office Supplies + Technology) are now highlighted; all others dimmed.
          3. Click on the Office Supplies column header in the visualization. All Office Supplies bars are highlighted while Technology bars dim.
          4. Click Office Supplies again to return to normal view.
          5. E. Add Highlighters to Filters

            1. Add highlighters to both the Group and State or Province filters by clicking their filter control buttons → Add as Highlighter.
            2. Test interactivity: selecting a state, a group, or a revenue range should highlight corresponding elements across the visualization.
            3. F. Publish Exercise 2

              1. Click Publish.

            Screenshot Requirements
