Fleet Telemetry Gap Analysis
A codebase audit of the lab.franklin Ansible collection confirmed the absence of a centralized syslog collection role. Across 52 collection roles, no existing path handles uniform log ingestion from Debian servers, compute nodes, or edge Jetson hardware into a single telemetry pipeline.
Node3 Repurposing: logging.lab.bitsmasher.net
An architectural plan was drafted to repurpose node3 (10.10.12.3) as the fleet's centralized logging node, resolving as logging.lab.bitsmasher.net. The design evaluated two approaches:
- Co-location: Run BIND9 DNS (port 53) and Rsyslog/Syslog-ng (port 514 UDP/TCP) on the same host, sharing node3's existing power and network topology.
- DNS migration: Shift primary DNS authority entirely to
skynet(10.10.16.10), freeing node3 for dedicated logging with no port contention.
The primary blocker is physical console access — a key injection into node3's BIOS/UEFI is required before the host can be provisioned. Until that gate is opened, the plan remains in architecture-review status.
Role Argument Specification Policy
Investigation into agent-assisted playbook maintenance concluded with a policy decision on role contract documentation:
- No README frontmatter for machine-readable contracts. Role argument specs, type validation, and constraint metadata must live exclusively in
roles/<role>/meta/argument_specs.yml. - Platform compatibility, Galaxy tags, and prerequisite dependencies remain anchored in
roles/<role>/meta/main.yml. - A collection-root
roles.jsonindex will be generated at publish time to serve agent discovery across the full 52-role collection — eliminating unstructured README scraping entirely.
Formalization of this policy into agent workspace configs (including .gemini/ project directives) is scheduled for the next operational cycle.
